Healthy Athletes is an important service offered to athletes competing in Special Olympics. Healthy Athletes provides health screenings and health education. The Healthy Athletes program is just getting started in Nevada and we hope that it will improve the lives of athletes all over the state.
Healthy Athletes biggest impact so far is preventative care. By eating healthy, drinking lots of water, and with regular exercise, our athletes are reducing their risk of certain diseases. This year at Summer Games, Raley’s Grub Hub provided healthy lunches to athletes. Athletes and their families are adapting to the healthier food and drink options at events.
Special Smiles was a pilot program that was rolled out this year providing oral hygiene tips and information on how to keep gums and teeth healthy. The Healthy Athlete program will be expanding in 2017 to include more Healthy Athlete components that will be offered at upcoming Regional competitions as well as at the 2017 Special Olympics Nevada Summer Games.
