BACKGROUND

Walk for the Gold is a premier event for Special Olympics Nevada. This non-competitive event brings together participants of all ages from throughout the community, to promote friendship and fitness, while raising funds and awareness for Special Olympics. Walkers are joined on the walk by Special Olympics athletes from their area, and may have the opportunity to experience first-hand a local competition or demonstration sport on the day of the walk. Walkers raise money by asking friends, family, business associates and co- workers to sponsor them. Funds are also raised through company sponsorship, and matching gifts.

The event begins with the business community, but it doesn't stop there. Teams consisting of 10 walkers (co-workers, family and friends) register and collect pledges to walk. There is no limit on the number of walk teams a company or organization can have. Individuals without a team are also encouraged to participate.

Funds raised through the Walk for the GoldŽ provide the necessary funding to support the year-round sports training and competition for the Special Olympics athletes in the area the Walk takes place.
