Every two years, thousands of
Special Olympics athletes from around the world come together
to showcase their athletic skills and celebrate the spirit of
Special Olympics.
Alternating between Summer and Winter Games, the Special Olympics
World Games is a world-class sporting event featuring intense
competition and inspiring performances by the great athletes
of Special Olympics.
The 2007 Special Olympics World Summer Games
were held in Shanghai, People's Republic of China 2-11 October
2007.
The event marked the first time the World Summer Games occurred
in Asia, and only the second time they will be held outside the
United States. In addition to some 7,000 athletes, the 2007
World Summer Games to attracted 40,000 volunteers, 3,500 event
officials and thousands of families, volunteers, spectators and
