Special Olympics Nevada holds several program championships every year. These events are the culmination of an athlete's training and competition cycle. In order to compete in a program championship, an athlete must have qualified at the local and regional levels.

BASKETBALL

Always one of our most popular sports, Basketball training begins in January and culminates in a Basketball Championship held each spring.

Competition has teams competing in five different divisions. There is also a small number of individual skills competitors participating in the hoops classic.

Tournaments are held in Reno for Northern Nevada teams and Las Vegas for Southern Nevada programs.

SUMMER GAMES June, 2010 Reno

In June, athletes from all over the state of Nevada will congregate in Reno for Special Olympics Nevada's annual Summer Games.  The 2010 Games will be held over the weekend of June 4-6, 2010 on the Reno High School and UNR campuses.

Over 400 Special Olympics athletes and coaches compete in aquatics and track & field with the heartfelt assistance of volunteers and family.

An opening ceremony showcasing the parade of athletes and Olympic style torch lighting by Nevada Law Enforcement kicks off the weekend's festivities. The fun continues with a full day of competition on Saturday and dance Saturday night. A traditional closing ceremony signals the end to a wonderful weekend.

Bowling

The season kicks off in July and culminates in November! Bowling is Nevada's anchor sport with over 1,000 athletes participating. With multi-day competition at The Orleans (Las Vegas) and the world famous National Bowling Stadium (Reno), both Northern and Southern Nevada athletes experience the thrill of major competition.

area/local competitions

Where applicable, competitions are hosted to give athletes the opportunity to compete and develop their skills toward more advanced future events.  Competitions are hosted for sports such as golf, softball, soccer and bocce.  As athlete participation numbers in certain sports increase, as other competition opportunities become available and as funding levels improve, Area/Local Competitions are often increased in size and scope.
