Special Olympics Nevada holds four program championships every year. These events are the culmination of an athlete's training and competition cycle. In order to compete in a program championship, an athlete must have qualified at the local and regional levels.

WINTER GAMES

Winter Games are designed as the culmination of the Special Olympics Nevada Winter Sports Season. Winter Games are an annual multi-sport, multi-day, Olympic style event held in the world-class setting of Kirkwood Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe.

The event kicks off with fireworks and cheers as members of the Kirkwood ski patrol ski the torch downhill in a torch relay display. Athletes are housed in the resort condos and prepare meals together with teammates amidst the bucolic surroundings. Competition includes downhill and cross-country skiing as well as snowboarding and snow shoeing.

BASKETBALL

Always one of our most popular sports, Basketball training culminates in a Basketball Championship held each spring.

Competition has teams competing in five different divisions. There is also a small number of individual skills competitors participating in the hoops classic.

SUMMER GAMES June, 2008 Reno

In June, athletes from all over the state of Nevada will congregate in Reno for Special Olympics Nevada's annual Summer Games.

The Summer Games take place on the Reno High School and UNR campuses. Over 400 Special Olympics athletes and coaches compete in aquatics, track & field, and gymnastics with the heartfelt assistance of volunteers and family. An opening ceremony showcasing the parade of athletes and Olympic style torch lighting kicks off the weekend's festivities. The fun continues with a full day of competition on Saturday and dance Saturday night. A traditional closing ceremony signals the end to a wonderful weekend.

Bowling

The season kicks off in July and culminates in November! Bowling is Nevada's anchor sport with over 1,000 athletes participating. With multi-day competition at The Orleans (Las Vegas) and the world famous National Bowling Stadium (Reno), both Northern and Southern Nevada athletes experience the thrill of major competition.
